AS3000 Changes Walkthrough

75 Min walk-through the 2018 changes

Course Summary

With over 300 updates in the latest edition of the AS/NZS 3000 (Wiring Rules), staying compliant is no longer just about knowing the book—it's about understanding the "Why" and "How" of the latest safety mandates. This course distills the 24-hour deep-dive curriculum into a high-impact session focused on the 12 most critical topics affecting everyday electrical installations.

We move beyond simple punctuation changes to focus on the 72 specific clauses that fundamentally change how you quote, install, and maintain electrical systems in Australia.

This course is broken into 12 short videos, great forToolbox Talks while still being jam packed with info.

This course is included in the MEGA MEMBERS Bundle here.

What You Will Learn

* IP Ratings & Manufacturer Instructions: Understanding why following the manufacturer’s lead is now a mandatory "shall" and how to maintain ingress protection (IP) integrity.

* Protection Methods: Mastering the transition from "direct/indirect contact" terminology to Basic and Fault Protection standards.

* Installation Work Practices: Navigating new requirements for equipment accessibility, adequate fixings, and the selection of materials for "abnormal operation" conditions (including external influences like fauna and moisture).

* Environmental & Safety Management: A deep dive into the mandatory use of condensation/pressure equalization valves and the revised "30-degree rule" for unprotected outdoor areas.

* Core Compliance Topics: Brief overviews of RCDs on all final sub-circuits, switchboard accessibility, thermal insulation, and the earthing of pools and spas.

* Alterations vs. Repairs: The word "addition" has been retired. Under the new rules, work is classified into two distinct categories, each with different compliance obligations.

* Universal RCD Mandates: The industry has reached a turning point: RCDs are now mandatory for all final sub-circuits.
          * Domestic: Every circuit—including ovens, cooktops, air conditioners, and hot water systems—requires 30mA RCD protection.
          * Non-Domestic: Mandatory for all lighting and socket-outlet circuits less than or equal to 32A.

* Switchboard Accessibility & Exit Paths: New construction requirements for switchrooms and boards to ensure worker safety.

* Thermal Insulation & Cable De-rating: This is often the most overlooked change. In new domestic installations, you must assume thermal insulation will be present, even if it hasn't been installed yet.

* Wiring Systems Near Building Surfaces & Mechanical Protection: The rules regarding "internal corners" have changed significantly. We focus on the 50mm rule and how it dictates your wiring methods in modern 90mm timber frames.

* Socket Outlets & Soft Wiring Systems: This module focuses on the mandatory separation of services and the specific physical clearances required to protect electrical accessories from heat and environmental moisture. We clear up the confusion surrounding "multimedia" plates and set the record straight on the new clearance requirements that are failing inspections across the country.

* Recessed Luminaires: All light fittings must now carry an IC-4 or related classification marking. This course covers why installing unmarked eBay or "grey market" fittings is a risk to your license.

* Mandatory Isolators: We clarify the requirement for lockable isolators for Air Conditioning (AC) and Hot Water (HW) units.

* Earthing of Outbuildings: We define the difference between individual (separate) and combined (shared roof/slab) buildings and the resulting requirements for MEN (Main Earthing Neutral) connections.

* Lifts as Appliances: A major shift! We explain when a lift is treated as "general equipment" under Section 4 vs. an "emergency lift" under Section 7, and what that means for your fire-rated cabling costs.

* Pools & Spas:
Mandatory bonding of all conductive parts (fences, ladders, diving boards) within 1.25m (arm’s reach) of the pool edge. We provide a simplified strategy for using an earth bar in an adaptable box to manage multiple bonding points.

He has contributed to 4 Standards Committees and has been a Director of the Institute of Electrical Inspectors for over 10 years and was the Chairman for 1 year. He provides expert leadership to electrical professionals across Australia.

Alan has 40 years of experience across many aspects of the electrical industry, including

  • Heavy Industry (QAL & Gladstone Ports)
  • High Voltage Switchyard Construction (Boyne Island)
  • Maritime Ore Carrier Ships (Gladstone)
  • Solar Farms & Renewables
  • Transformer & Motor Manufacturing
  • Domestic and Commercial installations
  • and Aeronautics electrical maintenance.

As a professional trainer, Alan has run conferences, seminars, online training and onsite workplace training for thousands of electrical engineers, electricians, contractors and electrical workers.

Alan’s dynamic and engaging training, backed by his wide range of electrical experience as an electrician, contractor and Inspector, helps electrical workers across Australia and New Zealand understand and stay up to date with the AS3000 Wiring Rules, 17 related Electrical Standards and their associated changes.

Alan came to our workplace and trained our 70 electricians on exactly what they needed to know to carry out the work for our business. Our guys now know exactly how to comply on our jobs, and I don’t have to wade through the whole book myself to find the relevant information for them.
